June has arrived and along with summer, it also brings the color of the month! A time when spray paint DIYs at the balcony take off, home decor becomes lighter, and minds start running to greek islands. For the COSMOS LAC palette, that means one thing: WHITE.

Hold on. Why, is white a color?

White: More Than Meets the Eye

It sounds like a philosophical question, but its answer is purely scientific. White not only IS a color, it is in a way ALL colors!

Science time:

White light is a combination of all visible wavelengths of light. When light passes through a prism, it breaks down into the colors of the visible spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) which, when combined, produce white light. When we see white, we actually see a mixture of all the colors of the rainbow. This effect is easily seen when light passes through a prism, breaking down into its spectral components. In nature we enjoy it diffused on snow-capped mountain peaks, frozen lakes, and in the fluffy clouds we gaze at from an airplane or looking up at the sky.

In the COSMOS of art, white is essential. It is used to create shades and tones and to highlight and accentuate other colors. It has been associated with minimalist and modern aesthetics, creating a sense of simplicity, clarity, and focus. In COSMOS LAC it is also essential, a shade that binds us to the perfect result, due to its many different uses, making white one of our most popular and best-selling shades.

Smells Like White DIY Spirit

Whether you’re looking to refresh your home decor or add a touch of Greek summer to your outdoor spaces, white spray paint is your go-to tool. Let’s dive into white summer and explore two summer-inspired DIY projects that will make your spaces shine.

#1 Whitewashed Mason Jar Lanterns

Materials Needed:

Mason jars

White spray paint

Twine or ribbon

Tea light candles (battery-operated or real)

Sandpaper (optional)

How to Make It:

1. Prepare Your Jars: Clean and dry the mason jars thoroughly. If you prefer a rustic look, lightly sand the jars to create a worn effect.

2. Spray Paint: In a well-ventilated area, apply a light coat of white spray paint to the jars. Allow the first coat to dry, then apply a second coat if needed. We propose a combination of COSMOS LAC EASY MAX 801 – CREAM WHITE & CHALK EFFECT 04 – CREAM, to make it more interesting.

3. Decorate: Once the paint is completely dry, wrap twine or ribbon around the neck of each jar, tying it off with a bow or knot for a charming touch.

4. Illuminate: Place a tea light candle inside each jar. For safety, consider using battery-operated tea lights, especially if the lanterns will be hung outdoors.

These whitewashed mason jar lanterns will add a warm, inviting glow to your summer evenings, perfect for garden parties or cozy nights on the patio.

#2 Summer Fruit Bowl

Materials Needed:

A wooden or metal bowl (thrift stores are great for finding unique shapes)

COSMOS LAC White spray paint

Sandpaper (optional, for distressing)

Lace or doilies

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

COSMOS LAC Varnish (optional)

How to Make It:

1. Prepare the Bowl: Start with a clean, dry bowl. If the bowl has any rough spots or old paint, sand it down to create a smooth surface for painting.

2. Spray Paint: In a well-ventilated area, apply an even coat of white spray paint to the entire bowl, both inside and out. Allow the paint to dry completely, and then apply a second coat if necessary for full coverage. Let it dry thoroughly. You can choose between COSMOS LAC RAL 9010 – PURE WHITE for a minimal style or CHALK EFFECT 02– PURE WHITE for a retro style. Your bowl, your call!

3. Add a Romantic Touch with Lace: Lay a piece of lace or a doily over the outside of the bowl. Use a hot glue gun to secure the lace in place, making sure it adheres smoothly without wrinkles. Trim any excess lace carefully with scissors.

4. Distress for a Retro Look (Optional): Lightly sand the edges and raised areas of the bowl to give it a distressed, vintage appearance. Focus on areas that would naturally wear over time, like the rim and base.

5. Final Touches: Let the sealant dry completely before using the bowl. Once dry, your white retro romantic fruit bowl is ready to hold your favorite summer fruits! The vibrant colors of summer fruits will highlight the minimal greatness of your project!

5 White Tips & Facts Nobody Told You

1. The use of white in literature and playwriting often signifies purity, the void, the ethereal or the unknown.

2. If you want to make a room look bigger, paint it white! The reflective nature of white means that it can make rooms look bigger and more open, a perfect architectural and decorative trick!

3. In cinematography, white adds contrast and clarity, but also symbolism:

Stanley Kubrick’s use of white in the film “2001: Space Odyssey” makes it strikingly futuristic. White clothes or props can symbolize the innocence or moral advantage of a character, such as Princess Leia in “Star Wars” or White Gandalf in “Lord of the Rings”.

4. In Western culture it might be the color of joy and is associated with new beginnings, marriage, and resurrection, but in the East, particularly in China and Japan, it has the exact opposite (or perhaps not) symbolic meaning, signifying mourning, and the cycle of life.

5. At COSMOS LAC you will find 11 different shades of white spray paint, with different finishes to choose your favorite. Discover them all here.
