GERA 1: Distortion as a New Reality

GERA 1 is a visual artist based in Athens. His artistic journey began on the streets in 2009 as a graffiti writer and gradually evolved into a multilayered visual language that moves between figuration and abstraction. In 2021, he graduated from the School of Fine Arts at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, deepening both theoretically and practically his exploration of the relationship between image, form, and perception.

At the core of his work lies the reinterpretation of reality through the visualization of repetitive color planes. Glitch art aesthetics serve as a central axis in GERA 1’s practice, where the image fractures, distorts, and reconstructs itself. Through successive layers of movement, form, and texture, a system of controlled deconstruction and multiple narratives emerges. His figurative expression becomes part of an abstract language in which alteration and distortion are not treated as flaws, but as narrative tools. Error is transformed into an aesthetic event, while the illusion of perfection is continuously questioned.

Everyday Life as Raw Material

GERA 1 draws inspiration from elements of everyday life that may initially seem insignificant. Light reflections, varied textures, shadows, or objects that capture his attention are recorded — often photographically — and serve as starting points for new works.

People also hold a significant place in his practice. Many of his figurative works depict familiar faces — individuals who have been, or continue to be, present in his life — transforming personal experience into visual storytelling.

Color in a Leading Role

When the conversation turns to color, the answer cannot be simple. If he had to single out a few, they would be yellow, magenta, and cyan — the primary colors from which all others are generated. This choice is far from arbitrary; it is directly connected to the structure and philosophy underpinning his work.

Sound, Space, and Movement

Music accompanies his creative process in a fluid and open way. His playlists range from rap and drill to jazz and ambient, while the environment in which he works plays a crucial role. The rhythm of the studio differs from that of an outdoor space. When traveling to another city or country for a project, he often listens to local music, allowing the surroundings to directly influence the process.

Cinematic References

In cinema, he singles out “Can You Water a Garden with Tears?” by Thodoris Selecos — a film that resonates with emotional intensity and the delicate balance between decay and sensitivity, elements that also run through his visual practice.

From the Street to the Canvas

Rooted in graffiti, GERA 1 continues to work across different surfaces, using spray paint as his primary medium. In his most recent works, large-scale compositions are transferred onto abstract-shaped canvases, where contrasting materials coexist and amplify the sense of fragmentation and reconnection.

He has created murals and participated in exhibitions in Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as in countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Russia, and the United States.

In GERA 1’s universe, reality is never static. It is distorted, fractured, and redefined — allowing the viewer to move between what feels familiar and what is constantly coming into being.
