Born in Karditsa in 1990, Gospel — his artistic name — began his journey into the world of graffiti and art from an early age. His passion for drawing developed in childhood, something that is evident throughout his work. In 2011, he moved to Athens, where he studied painting and illustration at the School of Applied Arts of Spyros Ornerakis. Since then, his art has continued to evolve, and he never stops impressing with his unique means of expression. Gospel’s style is rooted in capturing scenes from street culture, using clean color forms and the technique of negative space. His compositions draw inspiration mainly from the urban landscape and the Greek islands, while his color palette emerges from his own personal, lived experience.

Drawing Inspiration from Everyday Life

Gospel draws inspiration from many sources, with daily life being the most prominent. “I’m mainly inspired by the urban landscape, current events, the stories of the people around me, as well as my own experiences and memories,” he explains. His experiences in the Greek countryside, along with his life in Athens, influence him to translate scenes and emotions that touch his soul into his work.

Colors that Reflect the Spirit of the Greek Summer

His favorite color palette — blue, red, black, and white — carries a deeply personal character. These colors are directly linked to his memories from the island of Lemnos, where his family originates from. “The blue of the sea, the red and blue stripes painted on the fishermen’s white boats, the red buoys in the harbor, and the blue windows of the traditional island houses under the bright white sunlight — these details stirred something special in me since childhood,” he says. These colors, inseparable from the Greek landscape and the aesthetics of summer, give his compositions a distinctive identity.

Street Music as a Creative Companion

Music — and particularly hip hop — holds an important place in Gospel’s life and work. “I’ve mainly listened to hip hop since I was very young, whether foreign or Greek,” he says. At the same time, his deep love for Linkin Park, who often accompany him during long hours in the studio, reveals the range of musical influences that shape not only his listening habits but also his artistic expression.

Cinema and His Favorite Directors

Beyond painting and graffiti, Gospel has a strong passion for cinema — especially horror films and the grotesque. “I’m generally a lover of horror films and the grotesque element in cinema,” he notes. Some of his favorite movies include It, Insidious, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Frankenweenie, Sleepy Hollow, and Batman Returns. His favorite directors are Tim Burton, Stephen King, and in recent years Guillermo del Toro, whom he particularly admires for the series Cabinet of Curiosities.

Gospel’s art is a constant exploration of balance between the personal and the collective, the everyday and the aesthetics of the street. His works blend past and present, tradition and contemporary culture — inviting us, through his imagery, to discover new perspectives in both art and society.
