Lex Pan: When Emotion Becomes Image

Alexandra Panagiotidou, known in the art world as Lex Pan, is an artist who brings her inner world to life in a playful, honest, and sharply sarcastic way. Her work revolves around abstract portraits filled with color, personality, and emotional depth, touching on themes such as mental health, sexuality, feminism, and human relationships. Her anthropomorphic figures struggle to understand their own emotions — and in doing so, they invite the viewer into a similar journey of introspection.

A Journey Shaped by Experience

Although art was always present in her life, the defining turning point came when she worked in the studio of a visual artist in London. In 2014, after graduating from Anatolia College, she moved to the British capital to study English Literature and Theatre. However, the pandemic became a pivotal catalyst: during a difficult personal period, Lex found in creation the most authentic form of expression — and survival. “I made a new piece every day. It was my therapy,” she says.

Painting as an Emotional Mirror

Inspiration for Lex Pan often begins with personal experiences and everyday situations. Sometimes it stems from intense emotions; other times from soft, subtle observations of daily life. Through her creative process, she seeks to understand and externalize what she is living. “The core is always the same: how I respond to situations. What surrounds me changes — and so does my art.”

Color, Balance, and Signature

Color is an integral part of her work. She combines cool and warm tones, creating a visual dialogue that enhances the sense of balance and harmony. Pink, as she notes, functions almost like her artistic signature.

Music as an Emotional Guide

Music is a constant companion during her creative hours. Lyrics filled with sensitivity inspire her, and one of her consistent go-to tracks is “Cosmic Love” by Florence & the Machine. “It’s so emotional, and there’s a tenderness and vulnerability in it that I think mirrors how I feel when I translate my emotions onto my work.”

Influences from Literature, Cinema, and Life

Lex Pan also draws inspiration from other forms of art, such as literature and cinema. She has a particular fondness for the poetry of the World War I era, with ‘Funeral Blues’ by W.H. Auden being one of her favorite poems. In film, she describes herself as a devoted admirer of La La Land. As she emphasizes, the common thread running through all her influences is human relationships and the deep, unspoken emotions that shape them.

Works That Reflect the Unspoken

Lex’s ultimate goal is to offer viewers a space for recognition and empathy. “If someone sees themselves — and a feeling they struggle with — in one of my pieces, that’s a huge win.”

Five Sources of Inspiration

Among the artists who have shaped her are Fernando Botero, illustrator Pollynor, Alekos Fassianos, singer Alexandra Savior, and—perhaps most personally—her grandfather, also an artist she never met but felt close to through his work.“I realized that art is a way to communicate with the people you love, even if you’re not here.”

Lex Pan continues to live and work in Athens, creating, teaching, and building bridges between the inner world and artistic expression — always driven by color, humor, and honesty.
