Christina Papaioannou grew up in an artistic household, where music and painting were part of everyday life. Her mother’s studio — her mother being a painter herself — was her first playground. From her earliest years, her artistic nature found fertile ground to flourish. Born in Thessaloniki and a graduate of the Athens School of Fine Arts (2015), Papaioannou lives and works in Athens. In 2019, she received the MATAROA Award for emerging artists at the 4th Art Thessaloniki Contemporary Art Fair and has exhibited her work in Greece, Cyprus, London, Mallorca, and Vienna, with pieces now held in private collections. In her painting, she fuses the digital and the traditional in a unique way, creating a meta-pictorial language that balances the two without either one dominating.

Hyperblend Low

Her compositional process resembles a blender, dissolving references from art history — like her deep affection for Dürer’s engravings — along with stylistic techniques, children’s drawings, and elements from the world of pixels, video games, and digital culture. Through this complex artistic filter, Papaioannou constructs a new, enigmatic, and at times otherworldly visual universe — a language reminiscent of an alien civilization or, perhaps, an artificial intelligence.

Where do you draw inspiration for your work?

“For me, inspiration is a state — a way of staying open to possibilities and connections. I draw from everywhere: music, nature, poetry, technology, space, and existential themes. I feel it like a visitor who must find me ready when it knocks on the door.”

What is your favorite color?

“Lilac!”

What music accompanies you while you work?

“I go through different phases. Lofi is a constant companion, but for the past two years I’ve preferred podcasts — either comedy, or psychological and spiritual content. I really enjoy The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast and Know Thyself. That said, there are also moments of complete silence while creating, and those are equally important.”

Do you have a favorite film or director?

“I never had a particularly strong relationship with cinema. I enjoy watching Tarantino and Guy Ritchie, and more recently I discovered Star Wars, Back to the Future, and the Marvel universe — which I used to look down on! Of course, I appreciate more ‘serious’ films too, especially those based on true stories or historical events.”

Live From The Moon Low

Christina Papaioannou belongs to a new generation of artists unafraid to redefine the language of painting, enriching it with elements of the present without losing the deeply human quality of creation.

In a world where images are everywhere, her work offers a new lens — a complex Rorschach test for our digital era.
